Navigation

Setting up proper navigation for a user is critical when creating your site. You want your site to flow from page to page so that users can easily navigate and understand where to go to find information that they need. This guide will help show you a few options in creating strong navigation.

Header Navigation

To create a Navigation bar for the header, click on the search bar, on the bottom left under Create, click on the dropdown menu and select Page Navigation and then click NEW.

A layout of the page navigation item

Once opened give it a name so you can refer back to it later. Then you can add items to your navigation bar. Each item is equal to a button link in a navigation bar. For example, the navigation bar on this page has five different items, one for each link ("Home", "Standards & Policies", "Roadmap", "Events", "Training").

Text: Is the name you want in the navigation bar

Link: This is where you add the link to the page where you want the user to go to. This can either be an internal link (meaning it is in Brightspot) or an external link (outside of Brightspot, like Google).

Sub-Navigation

An example of sub-navigation

Sub Navigation allows for a button to have a dropdown of different links that are related to each other (see example photo on the left). This is useful if you have many links you want the user to be able to quickly access but you don't want the navigation bar to go across the screen.

This is a similar setup as the navigation bar.
1. In the Navigation bar, change the Title from Navigation Link to Navigation Text. This will make sure there is no link associated with the button, it will become a dropdown instead.

2. In the header of the navigation bar you are setting up, there is an option called Sub-Navigation, click on it. There you will add more items exactly how you would the navigation bar. Make sure to add either external or internal links and set the title.

Saving the Header

Once you have the header completed, publish the header. Afterward, if you have access, go to the Sites and Settings option in the admin menu. Then go to the Page Defaults tab and scroll down to Header. Then change Inherit to Select, or, if it is already on Select, simply choose the header you just created with the magnifying glass.
