How to Create a New Page

Begin a new page

  1. In the Dashboard, click the Page button in the Quick Start bar.
  2. If desired, toggle the page preview on or off by clicking the eye icon at the top right.
  3. Add a Display Name (or title) for the page. This can be hidden by using the Hide Display Name toggle.
  4. If needed, update the Internal Name. This can be used to show a different title to administrators. For example, if you want to see the section title along with the page title when you're searching for the page in the editing interface, you can add that here.
  5. If desired, add a Description. This appears in the header below the page title.

Add content

  1. If desired, add a Lead by clicking the +Add button and choosing a lead module. This a the large image or other main content at the top of a page. All pages do not need to include a lead.
  2. Add Content by clicking the +Add button and choosing a content module you'd like to add. (This tutorial chooses the Right Text Full Width module.) Use the left sidebar of the Add window to quickly navigate between types of content modules.

    • Contact Form gives you a submission form that is pre-filled with contact fields.
    • Custom form is a blank form which you can use to build a submission form.
    • Gallery is a gallery of images or videos. It includes image captions and credits, as well as controls for moving between images.
    • List is a list of Promos. (See the list tutorial)
    • Promo is a reference to another page (or external link). Most promos include an image, title, and description text. (See the promo tutorial)
    • Pull Quote is used to display text (usually a quote) larger than the surrounding text to call attention to it and visually break up a block of text.
    • Rich Text is used for most pages where you want to add text, images, and other standard page content.
    • Tabs allow you to organize content into a tab interface.
    • Misc includes less frequently used modules. You'll find the Container Module here, which allows you to add columns to a page.
  3. Open or close the content module you've added by clicking the module title or the carat at the left of the module title.
  4. In the content module editor, optionally add a title (in Rich Text Full Width, the title is for internal purposes only since titles can be added within the text editor).

Add or edit page URLs

The URL is the web address where your page can be found. To view or edit the page URLs, open the URLs area located in the furthest right panel (if viewed on a wide screen) or behind the preview panel (if viewed on a narrower screen; if needed, toggle the preview panel off by clicking the eye icon at the top).

  1. A permalink has been automatically created based on the display name. If you've chosen a section for your page, the section URL is added before the page URL. If you want to use that, you don't need to do anything further.
  2. If you want to change the page's address, uncheck the Generate Permalink box.
  3. If you want to add more addresses where this page can be accessed, click the +Add URL button.
  4. Add the link you want by starting beginning with a slash (/). This locates the page relative to your home page (for example, typing /page as the URL would locate your page at https://yoursite.byu.edu/page).
  5. The first dropdown below the new URL should say your site's name.
  6. Choose the right option for the link type in the second dropdown.

    • Permalink - The main link to the page (each page should probably only have one permalink)
    • Alias - An alternate link to the page. This is a good place to put short URLs if you want to allow people to access the page with a condensed site URL. (For example, if I had a frequently used page at /section-name/subsection-name/page-name, I might want to make it easier to explain or to type by adding an alias at /page-name).
    • Redirect (Permanent) - Lets search engines know that a page has permanently moved. With a permanent redirect you retain the search engine information about that page, so your search results are not affected. This will also keep people's bookmarks from breaking if they've saved the old address. This is great for migrating sites to Brightspot. If you're moving from an old site, you can make sure each page includes a permanent redirect from the old page address.
    • Redirect (Temporary) - This will be used less often than the others. It indicates that a page has moved, but will move back to the old address in the future.
