Tags

Tags are words or phrases used for organizing or marking related content on a website. They can help in sorting, searching, and filtering content.

Tags differ from sections in that content does not become part of a tag (as it does when it's put into a section), but a tag is effectively attached to a piece of content. Content can only belong to one section, but can have many tags associated with it.

Brightspot Tags documentation

Create a tag by clicking on the Tag button in the Quick Start bar in the website dashboard. Another way to create a new tag is to open the general search bar, select "tag" to be the content type to create, and click on the New button to create a new tag.

Adding a Tag to a Content

Ensure that the desired tags are already created before adding a tag to a content item. Most of the time, the Tag section on a content item can be found in the Main tab after scrolling past the Content section in Brightspot Editor. Click on the + sign under the Tag section to add a tag to the content item.

Tag Pages

Each tag in a site can have a page listing all content associated with the tag but is not required to. When a tag is created, it may have a URL. This will be the address of the tag's page. If there is no content, the tag page will automatically display a promo of every item that has that tag, ordered by the most recently published items first. An example is shown below.

Example of a Tag Page

If the editor does not want a tag to have a page on their site, make sure the page does not have a URL. The tag will still be usable for organization and purposes but will not appear as a link in tag lists.

If the editor wants to customize the tag page, they can add content as they would with any other page. Adding content will override the default behavior, so if the editor wants a list of all of the items that have that tag, they need to create a dynamic list to show those.

Tag Lists

Most Brightspot items do not display the tags that are associated with them. But Articles and Events do have a visible tag list automatically included at the bottom of the page, as shown at the bottom of this page.

Brightspot also has a Tag Cloud module and other list types that can be used to show tags in other places. The “Tag Cloud” list module allows the text color, button, background, and title of tags to be edited which changes how tags appear on the site. This is a type of the List module.

Hierarchical Tags

Brightspot allows editors to create a tag hierarchy so that they can categorize or organize the tags on the website. This structure allows a display of a categorized list of tags on a page or adds filters to a search page based on a parent tag. When creating a new tag, editors can set up a tag hierarchy by choosing another tag as the Parent.
